Duck Race

One of our fundraising events was the Annual Duck Race which was held on the River Ogmore, normally in September. This event has now ceased due to the difficulties in accessing the river to collect the ducks and the high river levels that have resulted in the actual race having to be cancelled.

Thousands of yellow plastic ducks, each sponsored for £1 by members of the public, were released into the river at the Rhiw Bridge and “raced” for a few hundred metres to our finishing post downstream as shown on the map below.

Route of the Lions Duck Race

We recorded the first three of our numbered ducks past the post and the lucky sponsors won a cash prize.

The 2011 Duck Race was due to be held on the 17th September but had to be cancelled for health and safety reasons. The weather and high level of the river prevented us from safely running the Duck Race.

All ducks were retrieved from the river with the assistance of the 1092 Bridgend Air Training Corps canoe squad, whose young members are able count their voluntary time towards community service awards. We are indebted to them for helping to ensure that club members did not get too wet.

With the help of The Princess of Wales Hospital and a number of local large retailers which grant us space to sell tickets we were able to raise about £3,000 from the event which helped to replenish our general charity account from which we funded a variety of local causes.

As a consequence of the current situation we have made the decision to postpone our other upcoming events for the safety of both our members and the general public. We hope to re-arrange these events next year.
